Why Let a Professional Organizer Shop for You? Benefits of Expert Product Selection for Home Organization

There are thousands of reasons why people choose to hire a professional organizer to get their homes decluttered, organized, and customized to fit their needs.

There are thousands of reasons why people choose to hire a professional organizer to get their homes decluttered, organized, and customized to fit their needs. However, one of the top reasons people SHOULD consider hiring a professional organizer is product shopping assistance and guidance. An experienced professional organizer knows the various products on the market that may fit your needs and can help you avoid choosing low-quality products or the wrong product for the space.

Small considerations have a huge impact

Here’s an example. I recently had a client who wanted drawers installed between 4 and 6 feet high in a closet for a small child’s room. She thought drawers would look great and provide extra storage for smaller items in the closet. She also wanted to leave plenty of space on the existing hanger rods for her child’s outfits.

However, what she was not considering with this choice was that at 5’3” tall, she wouldn’t be able to see into the higher drawers or even reach the items inside without grabbing a stepstool. This is where the experience of a professional organizer can prevent you from making expensive mistakes that may also result in organizational setups that don’t work for your living processes.

Choosing the best product for the space

Many of my clients are not shy about the reasons that they decided to seek help with their organizational projects, and the one I hear more than any other is that they feel capable of organizing other people’s stuff, but when it comes to their own, they “feel paralyzed.”

That same feeling of paralysis can extend to organizational product choices where you’re not confident about the aesthetic of the end result. A professional organizer can help here as well. They can begin with the room’s existing color palette and suggest colors and materials that will accentuate the existing decor of the space.

Measuring spaces to ensure the fit of the proper product is another major consideration. A big part of a professional organizer’s job is to maximize the client’s existing space. The majority of my clients simply own more than they can reasonably store in their homes. Through purging and sorting personal items into bins and other containers, I’m not actually creating more space but rather best utilizing the existing space by choosing products that enhance the overall aesthetic. Careful labeling of each individual bin helps speed up locating different product categories.

By carefully measuring the width, length, and height of every space, I can look for product that best fits that space while maintaining small tolerances between bins and other containers to make sure everything can be removed and put back easily.

Choosing the best product for the purpose

It also allows me to share the pros and cons of choices like stacking bins versus building racks to store every bin. In this example, I usually recommend stacking the bins if they’re going to be stored long-term, thus saving money on purchasing a rack. Alternatively, if the bins are going to be accessed regularly, I usually recommend purchasing storage racks so that each bin can be accessed easily without having to pull down the bins stacked on top of them.

Saving time

Another reason why people hire a professional organizer in the first place is the time savings associated with it. Even shopping online for the right product can be very time-consuming, to say nothing of the hassle of returning unused items or exchanging them for products that you find out later were better suited to the space. In addition, the common stress of the sheer number of options available and product shopping can feel as overwhelming as the organization itself. By allowing the organizer to explore unique options and make purchases on your behalf, they can have all of the products for your project ready to go and custom-chosen just for you!

Saving money

One concern many people have about hiring an organizer is that they will end up overspending on their desired project. However, in most situations, the result is often the opposite. A professional organizer can help you stay on budget and make decisions on when it is best to splurge and when to save. Many organizers will often have access to trade discounts or wholesale pricing as well. Depending on the size of the project, they may be open to passing those savings on to you.

If you’re looking for a highly polished look, like the end result of an episode of the Netflix series “The Home Edit,” a professional organizer’s product selection will go a long way toward achieving that result. Small touches like color-coordinated labels, matching bins, and streamlined systems unique to your individual needs will help enhance the form, function, and elegance of your project’s ultimate goal.
